HATLEY CASTLE
Unparalleled gardens and surroundings
James Dunsmuir inherited a vast fortune from his father Robert Dunsmuir, and, in 1908, he commissioned Victorian architect Samuel Maclure to design Hatley Castle. The largest private residence on the west coast at the time, Hatley Castle is built of local stone and trimmed by Valdez and Saturna Island sandstone. Its impressive exterior is matched only by the lavishness of the interior appointments: oak and rosewood paneled rooms, baronial fireplace, teak floors, and specially made lighting fixtures.
Previously a military college and now the site of the prestigious Royal Roads University, Hatley Castle is an ideal location for any event. Situated on 650 acres of land and set amidst beautiful Japanese, Rose and Italian gardens, Hatley Castle overlooks the Strait of Juan de Fuca and the Olympic Mountains. From dinners and receptions held in the grand rooms of the castle to tented parties offering unparalleled views, your guests will cherish their memory of their time at this amazing, historic location.
